Ballon d’Or is an award given by France Football, a weekly football magazine. It is being distributed since 1956 to this date.
In the year 2010, Ballon d’Or was merged with FIFA player of the year and they combined and called as FIFA Ballon d’Or. Agreement between both parties ended in 2016 and FIFA began to give different award known as The Best FIFA football awards. Ballon d’Or is considered to be one of the best Football awards in the world.

Ballon d’Or awards were started in 1956 only to honor European players. In 1995, It was expanded and includes all the players from the world who played in European clubs. However, in 2007, the award was extended and now includes all the players irrespective to any league.
Stanley Matthews was the first player to win the award. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are the only players in the history to won Ballon d’Or award five times each. George Weah was the only African player to win the award. Kaka was the last player to win this award before the era of Messi and Ronaldo begin.
