What is the UEFA Nations League?

UEFA Nations League is an international football tournament began in September 2018. Tournament allowed countries to play against equally ranked teams. It has four leagues (A, B, C, and D) and four group winners from League A will qualify for the finals, which will be held in June 2019.

For the remaining teams, it will be a chance to play against equally ranked competitors and a way to UEFA EURO 2020. In 2018-19 tournament 55 nations were playing.

UEFA Nations League format-

It has four leagues A, B, C, and D with 55 teams.

League A

It has four groups and winner of all four groups will qualify for UEFA Nations League Finals in June 2019. Interestingly four lowest teams in all four groups will be relegated to League B in 2020 edition.

A1: Germany, France, Netherlands
A2: Belgium, Switzerland, Iceland
A3: Portugal, Italy, Poland
A4: Spain, England, Croatia

League B

This league also have four groups with three teams each. Winners of all groups will be promoted to League A for 2020 edition and bottom teams of each group will be relegated to League C.

B1: Slovakia, Ukraine, Czech Republic
B2: Russia, Sweden, Turkey
B3: Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Northern Ireland
B4: Wales, Republic of Ireland, Denmark

League C

It has four groups. Three groups have four teams while the fourth group pot has three teams. It has the same rule applied, four winners of each group will be promoted to League B and bottom teams of each group will be relegated to League D.

C1: Scotland, Albania, Israel
C2: Hungary, Greece, Finland, Estonia
C3: Slovenia, Norway, Bulgaria, Cyprus
C4: Romania, Serbia, Montenegro, Lithuania

League D

It has four groups with four teams each. Top teams from each group will be promoted to League C and will play a playoff for UEFA EURO 2020 (only unqualified those teams) in March 2020.

D1: Georgia, Latvia, Kazakhstan, Andorra
D2: Belarus, Luxembourg, Moldova, San Marino
D3: Azerbaijan, Faroe Islands, Malta, Kosovo
D4: FYR Macedonia, Armenia, Liechtenstein, Gibraltar
